We are very disappointed to announce that the 2012 Nicolet Nor-Ski which was scheduled for February 4 has been cancelled due to a lack of sufficient snow. The trails have enough snow to ski on but there is simply not enough snow to properly groom and prepare road crossings for a quality race course. We have received a lot of positive feedback from the race community over the past few months about the return of the Nicolet Nor-Ski and we look forward to providing you with a quality event next year with cooperation from Mother Nature! Those of you who pre-registered for this year’s race will be given a credit that can be used on any future event sponsored by the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team. If you have further questions please contact the race director at 920-265-9523.

Bryan Fish, US Ski Team Coach is making a stop in Green Bay on his way to the European Campaign to excite our ski community with a coaches ski technique clinic and a “Fire up for skiing” type of presentation on Sunday October 30, 2011.

The coaches clinic will start at 1:30 pm and be approximately 2 hours in length and will be free of charge. The focus audience is on the active Coaches in the NE Wisconsin area including Wisconsin High School Nordic Ski League (WHSNSL) coaches. This event is organized with Bryan by the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team and our local youth ski group, Bay Nordic.

The clinic will focus on proper positions, mechanics and motions and go through drills and exercises on dryland and on rollerskis. The clinic unlocks some of the mystery of Nordic ski technique and how to effectively teach technique. All local coaches (and would be coaches!) are encouraged to attend.

“This clinic is a very powerful way to make a step change in the skiers you coach and your own skiing. After all, our young skiers copy our technique so solid ski technique by our area coaches translates into better/faster junior skiers and more fun for all involved. If you coach or are thinking of coaching come out to this clinic to get on the same page (or at least open the book!).”
Scott Putman, Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team Coach

In addition to the clinic, Bryan will give a “Fire up for the ski season” presentation at 11:40 in the ski lodge. Expect to feel some of the excitement associated with USST, continental and European skiing and as the excitement and tension builds for the first races of the season in Sweden. We certainly felt some of that excitement in person when the ‘Internationals’ stormed our Stump Farm Ski race last year!

Please see the announcement regarding the cancellation of the Nicolet Nor-Ski for 2012.

More news will be available at this page for next year’s Nicolet Nor-Ski.

The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team and Lakewood Ski Club will host 36K and 7K ski races on Saturday, February 4, 2012, partnering with McCauslin Brook Golf Course and the Chequamegon/Nicolet National Forest Service.

The scenic beauty, consistent snow, excellent grooming, and challenging terrain of the Lakewood trails have led to a revival of the Nicolet Nor-ski combined with a Wisconsin High School Nordic League Invitation race. Ski races have not been held on the hilly Lakewood trails in the Nicolet National Forest since 2004.

About the trails by Bryan Fish, US Ski team coach

“Lakewood is one of my favorite places to ski – if not my favorite – anywhere.

If you like the Birkie trail then I’m confident you’ll like the Lakewood trails.

The combination of terrain, aesthetics and Pisten Bully grooming inspired me to bring the UW-Green Bay ski team up there for off-weekend training when I lived in Green Bay. Personally, Lakewoods was a sanctuary. I would head up after work in March and I would enjoy the immaculately groomed roller-coaster like terrain and had the place all to myself. It is a hidden gem in Midwest skiing. Lakewoodski trails holds a particularly important place for me, for it was there that I decided to pursue ski coaching on a full time basis. “

The Race

The 36K Nor-ski will be groomed for both classic and skate techniques, with wave starts limited to 20 persons. Classic technique will lead off at 11:30 am with skate waves beginning at 11:45 am. The High school racers for the 7K classic technique will have wave starts at beginning at 10 am. The Middle school racers will have a 3.5 K course for their classic style race directly after the HS racers. The citizens’ 7k open will start at noon.

Racers will have access to the McCauslin Brook Club House for registration, complementary lunch/snack and awards. The race will be chip timed and there will be six feed and support stations on the course. The 7k will have 10 year age groups to 60 plus, male and female. The 36K open race will have 5 year award spans again up to 60+ years old, for both genders. The 36K classic race will have 10 yea age awards to 60+

Costs and registration

Citizen race:

Online Registration is live at Active.com

7K – $25
36K – $45
$10 additional fee for day of race registration.

High school/middle school racers is $4.

Adults Group/club entries (more than 3 together) will receive a $5 discount per person and Coaches for Junior and Collegiate teams and Collegiate racers are discounted to $30 for the 36k. For these entries, please contact the Race Director for registration

All proceeds benefit the middle and high school Nordic ski programs of the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team.

Many people have told both Ashwaubenon and Lakewood club members how exciting this revival is. We think so too. Come on out and join in the excitement. The Nor-ski is back!

The Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team will host 10 mile and 5K trail races and a 5K run+20 mi Mt. bike duathlon at the Brown County Reforestation Camp in Suamico on Sunday, October 30th as a fundraiser. 10 mi race start is 9:30 a.m. 5K start is 11:00 a.m. Join the challenging 10 mi on twisty up and down single track or the moderate soft trail 5K for a perfect fall work out. Duathlon participants will run the 5K and then bike 2-10 mi loops on a fun and challenging single track. We encourage adult and high school athletes to come out. Age group awards for all races.

Once again we will have chip timing. Timing will be done by Superior Timing and should make already great event much more seamless. Enjoy.

With all the nastiness the weather threw at us, it was a great turnout and a great event. Special thanks to the CXC Elite team with their European friends that joined us at the last minute and showed us how it’s done. Thanks to the out of town high school teams that came too, we appreciate you making the trip. We will post more on this and include some wonderful photos of the whole race later. But for now, here are your results.

Conditions update: (2/19/11) The course is quite hard this morning. It should soften as the day warms up. The race course ranges between very good to some few hundred yards of poor. Trail froze up and is being tilled. Poor spots are the area shown in the Skinnyski cover picture were shovel covered, an ice spot after the clear cut on maples was covered as well. There was a spot on the 5k course on the pines trail which has some base dirt that we also covered with snow. We also covered a number of other areas to which groomed up well with the PB. I expect it to be wicked fast.

Additional comments: The wind did add some twigs to the mix. The snow is dirty from leaves and branches. One corner had a bunch of fir needles which should mix in when tilled (at about 15k). I didn’t hit anything objectionable with my skis as we were working (likewise with the rest of our crew) so a hard track pair of good skis would probably be OK but B skis would be recommended now just to be safe. Course Director Scott Putman

The 18.5k race will start at 11:30 instead of 11 to accommodate what looks to be a strong turnout of both master skiers and high school skiers. This is going to be a fun event!

Other news. The CXC Elite team and a contingent of European skiers that had planned on skiing the Supertour race in Madison are going to be racing the Stump Farm! We are pleased and honored to host them. Competition will be fierce.

The Stump Farm Open cross country ski race will take place again this year on February 19th, 2011. The main event is our single lap 20K freestyle race using the existing trails in new and interesting ways, taking full advantage of the twisty, windy and rolling terrain. There are some new additions to this race that we think you will enjoy. The 5K adult race returns and you will be joined by a large group of young and fun high school and middle school skiers. If you want to bring your kids but don’t like having to give up your own race, Bay Nordic has got you covered! See below. First the basics.

New this year! The Stump Farm Open is taking place in conjunction with a Bay Nordic youth event. What that means for you is that you can bring your skiing kids age 4 and over, have them ski in the Bay Nordic event, then leave them with Bay Nordic while you ski the 20k race. You will need to be sure you can complete the race by 12:30, but other than that, Bay Nordic will keep your kids entertained while you ski and probably have some fun at the same time.

As always there will be overall male and female prizes, our unique age division awards, door prizes, free homemade food for racers, or for non racers, food at $5 per person.

Online registration is available at Active.com though only for the 20K and 5K adult races. If you want a family pass, you must register at the site the morning of the race. High school and middle school racers will register with their teams, or onsite the morning of the race.
